Symptom

You receive the error message KE 396 (”Inconsistency between a document field and the prof. segment number”) when you make a posting in external accounting (for example goods movement) or when you create a sales order because of an alternative profit center or alternative business area.

Reason and Prerequisites

You enter a profitability segment and a statistical auxiliary account assignment as an account assignment. Both objects are assigned to the same profit center. With manually entered documents you may be able to directly enter the profit center. The system may issue the error message KE 396 if you enter a profit center which differs from the profit center of the auxiliary account assignment and the profit center of the profitability segment. The same error can occur if a profit center is automatically derived from preceding documents (for example from a purchase order).
The system may also issue the error message KE 396 if you want the default profit center to be overwritten by a statistical auxiliary account assignment (for example a CO order) in Transaction VA01 and if the COBL structure contains the new profit center of the auxiliary account assignment when the system potentially redetermines the profitability segment, but still contains the old default profit center when the system checks the validity of the profitability segment.

Solution

Implement the attached program corrections.
The profit center is determined from the auxiliary account assignment or from the profitability segment.
